On Sunday night, April 24, a man driving drunk allegedly caused a crash which killed a young girl and injured three others.
According to Lafayette Police Department, the accident happened at around 10.30 p.m. when 34 year old Albert K. Sampy of Lafayette was driving at high speed down N. University Avenue. He tried to avoid a rear end crash and instead swerved into the oncoming traffic hitting another vehicle head on.
Isley Thibodeaux, aged 10 was killed in the crash and three others in the vehicle were injured including the driver who had a broken leg.
Sampy, who had two previous drunken driving arrests, and his passenger suffered minor injuries. Police suspected Sampy of driving under the influence as he had red bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and a strong smell of alcohol, but he refused a blood test. Police obtained a search warrant for blood and urine, and results are pending.
In the meantime Sampy was booked on OWI 3rd offense, operating a vehicle while under suspension, vehicular homicide, and vehicular negligent injuring.
In addition, Sampy has been arrested several times since 1999 for theft, robbery, burglary, resisting arrest and principal to murder. He was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2001 for two burglary and a simple robbery arrests.
