On Sunday, October 9, evangelist Vernon Stephenson was fatally injured in a single vehicle car accident.
According to the Louisiana State Police the accident happened at 12.20 a.m. when 73 year old Vernon Stephenson and his 74 year old wife, Rebecca, were traveling east on Highway 6 just west of Highway 476. It appears that the vehicle exited the right side of the road, hit an embankment and rolled over.
Both were transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport for treatment where Vernon Stephenson died later that afternoon from his injuries. His wife sustained minor injuries.
It is not yet know what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway but both victims spoke with troopers before being transported to hospital.
The accident is still under investigation.
Stephenson was awarded the “Lifetime Achievement” award at the 2016 State Evangelism Conference in Lafayette on January 27 by the Louisiana Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists.
