On Tuesday, August 2, a pilot from Lafayette was killed in plane crash in the Gulf of Mexico.
According to officials with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s office, 63 year old Al Habetz was flying an eight passenger twin engine Cessna and crashed in the water off Destin. He had dropped his passengers off at Destin airport but around 8.30 last night witnesses saw the plane fall from the sky and crash into the water near Silver Beach Towers and the Breakers Condominiums, around half a mile from the shore.
Search crews were sent out immediately and continued to search until well past midnight. The plane was discovered around 2 p.m. on the following day and was recovered and brought to the surface on Thursday morning. The pilot’s body was also recovered.
The National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the cause of the crash.
