On Sunday, June 26, a child died when improperly restrained in a pickup accident.
According to Louisianan State Troopers, the accident happened just before 6.30 a.m. on Louisiana Highway 182. Bendell Williams, aged 24 was driving a pickup and she drove off the right side of the Highway in St. Landry Parish., the truck hit an embankment and overturned.
The one year old child, Jamaika Johnson of Carencro was riding in the rear seat of the truck and was improperly restrained as she was not in a proper child car seat but just had with a shoulder-lap belt. She suffered severe injuries and was taken to Opelousas General Hospital, where she later died.
Williams who was wearing the appropriate seat belt was treated for moderate injuries.
The crash remains under investigation and no decision has been made about possible charges but officials are reminding parents to use the correct car seats for their children.
